Common name: Yellow catfish, Asian
redtail catfish.
Distribution: Asia: Mekong, Chao
Phraya, and Xe Bangfai Basins; Malay
Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo
(Pablico, 1997a).
Habitat: Rivers and streams, lakes,
marshlands, and peat swamps; large
muddy rivers with slow current and
soft bottom.
Description: Head of this species is
flattened rather than conical. Dorsal
fin is depressed and does not reach the
adipose fin. Pectoral fin is smooth in
front, and its spines are serrated along
the inner edge. Base of the adipose fin
is shorter than that of the dorsal fin
and about equal to that of the anal fin.
Barbels are in four pairs. Body color is
brown, often with a greenish sheen. Fins
are gray with a violet tint. It grows to a
maximum size of 65 cm (Pablico, 1997a).
