Common name: North African catfish.
Distribution: China, Thailand, Egypt,
Uganda, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, and
Turkey, Africa, as well as in Europe,
Asia, and South America (Pouomogne,
2014).
Habitat: Lakes, streams, rivers, swamps,
and floodplains.
Description: Body of this species is
elongated. Head is large, depressed,
and bony with small eyes. Narrow and
angular occipital process is seen. Gill
openings are wide. Mouth is terminal
and large. Four pairs of barbels are
present. Dorsal and anal fins are long.
Dorsal fin spine and adipose fin are
absent. Anterior edge of pectoral spine
is serrated. Caudal fin is rounded. Color
varies from sandy-yellow through gray
to olive with dark greenish brown
markings, and belly is white. This species grows to a maximum size of 1.5 m
and 60 kg (Pouomogne, 2014).
