Habitat: Freshwater, brackish water;
large rivers, lakes, tanks.
Description: Body of this species is
elongated and strongly compressed.
Head is broad and snout is depressed.
Mouth is very deeply cleft and its corner reaches far behind the eyes. Teeth
in jaws are set in wide bands. Barbels
are in two pairs. Maxillary barbels
extend to anterior margin of the anal
fin. Mandibular barbels, which are
longer than the pelvic fin, extend to
the angle of the mouth. Eyes are small
with a free orbital margin. Dorsal fin is
small and anal fin is very long. Eyes are
located in front of the vertical through
the corner of the mouth. This species
reaches a maximum size of 240 cm
(Torres, 1991v).

Dorsal spine is serrated posteriorly,
and pectoral is serrated internally.
Adipose fin is present. Caudal fin is
deeply forked. Body is silver colored
with grayish back. Pectoral and anal
