Order: Siluriformes
Family: Siluridae
Common name: Wels catfish.
Distribution: Europe and Asia; North,
Baltic, Black, Caspian, and Aral Sea
Basins; as far north as southern Sweden
and Finland (Torres, 1991s).
Habitat: Freshwater and brackish
water; large and medium-sized lowland rivers, backwaters, and well-vegetated lakes.
Description: This species has two pairs
of mental barbels and its anal fin has
83–95 rays. Body is naked. Head is large
and depressed. Dorsal fin has 2–5 rays
and caudal fin is rounded or truncate.
There is no adipose fin. Anal rays are
almost touching the caudal fin. Caudal
fin has 17 rays. This species grows to a
maximum length of 500 cm and weight
of 306 kg (Torres, 1991s).
