Common name: Butter catfish.
Distribution: Asia: Indian subcontinent and Myanmar (Reyes, 1993i).
Habitat: Freshwater, brackish water;
quiet, shallow (0.5–1.5 m), often muddy
water, in sandy streams, rivers, and
tanks; canals, beels, and inundated
fields.
Description: Body of this species
is elongated and compressed. Head
is small and broad. Snout is bluntly
rounded. Mouth is superior. Lips are
thin. Jaws are subequal and lower jaw is
prominent. Barbels are present. Dorsal
fin is inserted above last half of pectoral fin. Pelvic fins are short. Anal fin is
very long and close to caudal fin, which
is forked. Lateral line is complete. This
species grows to a maximum size of
45 cm (Shukla, 2005).
