Common name: Longneck croaker.
Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Mauritania to Angola, becoming scarce
north of Cape Verde (Maigret and Ly,
1986).
Habitat: Coastal waters from shoreline to about 150 m depth, over mud
and sandy mud bottoms, uncommon
in rocky areas; juveniles and subadults
enter estuaries and rivers.
Description: Body of this species is
very long and rounded in cross section. Head is long and clearly  concave  on  nape. Interorbital  space is
very narrow, less than  eye. Mouth  is
large, strongly  oblique, and its lower
jaw  is clearly projecting. A  pair of
sharp  canines  is seen near the tip of
the upper  jaw. Caudal fin is pointed.
Color of the body is silvery gray,
often with faint dark lines following oblique scale rows on the back and
upper sides. Pectoral, anal, and  pelvic  fins are yellowish and caudal  is
dark gray. This species reaches a size
of 140 cm and 15 kg (Marine Species
Identification Portal).
