Habitat: Marine and brackish water;
coastal waters over mud bottom from
shoreline to about 50 m depth; also

Description: Body of this species is
elongated and compressed. Scales on
body are mostly ctenoid (comb-like), and
scales on breast and head are smaller
and cycloid. Lateral line extends to tip
of caudal fin. Head is short and eye is
rather large. Mouth is large, strongly
oblique. Of the two jaws either the terminal or lower jaw is slightly projecting.
Teeth are small and set in narrow bands
in jaws. Chin is without barbel but with
six pores. Among these pores, the medial
pair is located at the tip of the lower jaw.
Snout has five marginal pores only. The
gill rakers are long and slender. Caudal
fin is pointed (juveniles) to rhomboidal
(adults). Color of body is silvery gray
with a reddish tint, often with oblique
lines and scattered dark spots on the
back. Belly is yellowish during breeding
season. Fins are grayish and dark spots
are seen on the soft part of the dorsal fin,
forming two or three longitudinal rows.
Tip of first dorsal fin is dusky, and pelvic
and anal fins are yellowish. It grows to
a maximum size of 47 cm (FAO, 2014f).

and eyes are moderate. Pectoral fin is
half of head length and pelvic fin is
about 75% of pectoral length. Caudal
fin is rounded. Body color is gray or
grayish green on lateral line. There
are four or five large black blotches in
adults. Body is also distinct with white
spots scattered on body and fins. This
species grows to a maximum size of
183 cm and 30 kg (Fahad, 2011a).
