Common name: Asp.
Distribution: Europe and Asia (Bailly,
1997a).
Habitat: Lakes and lower reaches of
rivers and estuaries; large rivers.
Description: Body of this species is
oblong and laterally compressed with a
long sharp head. It has an anal fin with
12–14.5 branched rays. Lateral line has
a total of 64–76 scales. Maxilla extends
beyond the front margin of the eye, and
a sharp keel is seen between the pelvic fin and anal fin origins covered by
scales. Coloration is green back with
silver to blue tints. Flanks are lighter
and belly is silver white. Pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins are gray to brown.
This species has a maximum length of
120 cm and weight of 9 kg (Bailly, 1997a).
