Family: Cyprinidae
Common name: Hard-lipped barb,
bonylip barb.
Distribution: Southeast Asia, including major rivers in Burma, Thailand,
Indochina, and Peninsular Malaysia. It is
also recorded from Sumatra, Java, and
Borneo. In Singapore (Ecology Asia).
Habitat: Large streams with slow current and muddy to sandy substrate.
Description: Body of this species is
laterally compressed and rhomboidal
shaped. It is mainly silvery in color, but
its dorsal surface is sometimes greenish
or brownish. Fins are pinkish grading to
red at the margins. Extreme margins of
pelvic and anal fins are pale. Caudal fin
is deeply forked, and barbels are small.
At the base of the caudal fin, there is a
single black marking. It has a maximum
length of 32 cm (Ecology Asia).
