Common name: Black mahseer, khudree mahseer, Deccan mahseer, yellow mahseer.
Distribution: India and Sri Lanka
(Raghavan, 2013).
Habitat: Major rivers and reservoirs;
cool, fast-flowing, rocky streams; tanks
and cold-water lakes.
Description: In this species males are
generally smaller than females. Males
have large labial palp. There is no black
streak behind gill opening. Tip of snout
is not fleshly tuberculated. Lateral line
has 25–27 scales. Length of head is
more or less equal to depth of body. Eye
diameter is 5.5–7.0 in head length. Lips
are thick, with an uninterrupted fold
across the lower jaw. Maxillary pair
of barbels are longer than the rostral,
and extend to below the last third of the
eye. Pectoral fin is as long as the head
excluding the snout; it reaches the ventral fin, which is a little shorter. Caudal
fin is deeply forked. Color of body is
silvery or greenish along the upper half
of the body, becoming silvery shot with
gold on the sides and beneath. Lower
fins are reddish yellow. This species
grows to a maximum size of 130 cm and
45 kg (Big Fishes of the World).
