Tor tambroides Bleeker 1854
Common name: Malayan mahseer,
Thai mahseer.
Distribution: Throughout southern Asia
and from Indonesia to China (Entri, 2013).
Habitat: Rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.
Description: Adults of this species
are streamlined in shape, and vary in
color from yellowish brown to pinkish, with dark fins. The tail fin is deeply
forked and the dorsal fin is large. Scale
color is reddish white. Lip is thick and
fleshy. The presence of a long median
lobe on the lower lip and large scales
with dark vertical bands, especially on
the scales above the lateral line, is the
most distinctive feature of this species.
The ranges of gill rakers and vertebrae
numbers are 17–23 and 30–34, respectively. The number of branchiostegals
rays is three. The meristic characteristics showed greater differences among
the Tor tambroides populations than the
morphometric characteristics. This fish
grows to a maximum length of 100 cm
and maximum weight of 80 kg (Poh,
2006; Entri, 2013).
