Common name: Common snowtrout,
Alawan snowtrout.
Distribution: Asia: Himalayan region
of India, Sikkim and Bhutan, Nepal,
Pakistan, and Afghanistan (Luna, 1988s).
Habitat: Mountain streams and rivers.
Description: This species has a more
slender body form and more length of
caudal fin and snout (preorbital length)
than percentage of total length. Mouth
is semicircular and subventral in position. An adhesive organ occurs at the
ventral head region, just below the
mouth opening. It consists of a crescent callus part, and below it, labial
folds bear semispherical tubercles. The
values (against standard length) of different parameters are given in parentheses: snout length (5.46%) and caudal
fin length (24.11%), eye diameter (4.71%),
post-orbital length (7.02%), head length
(17.05%), body depth (14.69%), dorsal fin
base (9.74%), and anal fin base (5.17%).
This species reaches a maximum
size of 60 cm (Luna, 1988s; Dasi and
Nag, 2008).
