Habitat: Rivers and tributaries.
Description: This species has an elongated subcylindrical body with a short,
blunt, and slightly prognathous upper
jaw. Ventral surface of head and anterior
part of body are flattish, short, somewhat
cone shaped, and blunt. Snout is usually smooth and covered with warys in
the male. Interorbital space is broad and
flat. Mouth is inferior, wide, and slightly
arched. Lips are fleshy and continuous and marginally sharply attenuated.
The margin of the lower lip is sharp.
Barbels are in two pairs. Dorsal fin is
inserted about opposite to pelvic fins.
Caudal fin is deeply emarginated. Scales
are very small and elliptical. This species
reaches a maximum size of 60 cm and
2.5 kg (Froese and Pauly, 2006d).

Description: This species has a smooth
and pointed snout. Mouth is subterminal, horizontal, arch shaped, and
protractile. Lips are thick and fleshy.
Lower labial fold is uninterrupted and
trilobed. Median lobe is well developed and free at the tip. Barbels are in
two pairs and are longer than the eye.
Dorsal spine is strong and scales are
small. Lateral line has 100–110 scales.
Live specimens possess dark brown
color with black specks on the back and
yellowish white below. Fins are pinkish yellow. This species attains a maximum length of 30 cm (Froese and Pauly,
2006c; PMNH).
