Habitat: Midwater to bottom depths in
rivers, streams, floodplains, and occasionally in reservoirs.
Description: Body is strongly compressed. Back is elevated and its dorsal
profile is arched, often concave above
the occiput. Head is small and snout is
pointed. Mouth is terminal. Barbels are
very minute or rudimentary, especially
the upper ones, which sometimes disappear entirely. Color in life is silvery
white, sometimes with a golden tint.
Dorsal and caudal fins are gray to
gray-yellow. Anal and pelvic fins are
light orange and their tips are reddish. Pectoral fins are pale to light yellow. Very few tubercles are seen on the
snout. This species grows to a maximum size of 90 cm and 13 kg (Bailly,
1997j; Rainboth, 1996).
