Tinca tinca Linnaeus 1758
Common name: Tench.
Distribution: Eurasia (Torres, 1991u).
Habitat: Freshwater, brackish water;
shallow, densely vegetated lakes and
backwaters.
Description: Body of this species is
thickset, heavy, and laterally compressed. Caudal peduncle is characteristically deep and short. Skin is
thickened and slimy. Scales are small
and embedded. Head is triangular.
Eye is orange-red and small. Snout
is relatively long. The mouth is very
obligue and has a pair of large maxillary barbels, one at each corner of the
mouth. Overall coloration of body is
olive-green and at times dark green or
almost black, with golden reflections
on ventral surface. This species grows
to a maximum size of 70 cm and 7.5 kg
(Torres, 1991u).
