Habitat: Freshwater and brackish water;
rivers and ponds.
Description: Dorsal profile of this species is more convex than the abdomen.
Lips are thick and fringed. Two pairs
of barbels are present, and rostral pair
is longer than maxillary pair. Caudal
peduncle is short. Lateral line is well
marked. Scales are of moderate size.
Mouth is wide and inferior. Color of
the body is dark black, but ventral is
light-dark. Ventral portion of opercular
region is white and iris is coppery.
This grows to a maximum size of 90 cm
and 8 kg (Bashar, 2010a; Reyes, 1993f).

Distribution: Asia: India, Bangladesh,
and Pakistan (Reyes, 1993e).
Habitat: Rivers.
Description: Body of this species is
elongated. Its dorsal profile is more
convex than the ventral. Snout projects
slightly beyond the mouth and is often
studded with pores. A pair of small
maxillary barbels is hidden inside
the labial fold. Dorsal fin originates
midway between snout tip and anterior base of anal fin. Pelvics originate
slightly nearer to snout tip than to caudal base. Body is bluish or darkish on
upper half, silvery below, and the opercle is light orange. This species reaches
a maximum size of 90 cm and 450 g.
