Common name: Rohu.
Distribution: South Asia: India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, and Pakistan (Froese and Pauly, 2013).
Habitat: Rivers, ponds.
Description: Body of this species is
bilaterally symmetrical and moderately
elongated. Its dorsal profile is more
arched than the ventral profile. Head
is without scales and snout is fairly
depressed, projecting beyond mouth.
Eyes are dorsolateral in position, not
visible from outside of head. Mouth is
small and inferior. Lips are thick and
fringed with a distinct inner fold to each
lip. A pair of small maxillary barbels is
concealed in a lateral groove. Dorsal fin
is inserted midway between snout tip
and base of caudal fin. Pectoral and pelvic fins are laterally inserted. Caudal fin
is deeply forked. Color of body is bluish
on back and silvery on flanks and belly.
It reaches a maximum length of 2 m and
a weight of about 110 kg (Jena, 2014).
