Potamogeton richardsonii (A. Bennett) (Rydberg)

Family: Potamogetonaceae
Common name: Richardson’s pondweed, redhead pondweed.
Distribution: Native to much of northern North America, including all of
Canada and the northern and western
United States.
Habitat: Lacustrine (in lakes or ponds),
riverine (in rivers or streams).
Description: This perennial herb grows
a narrow, mostly unbranched stem
from a mat of rhizomes in the substrate.
It reaches about a meter in maximum
length. Leaves of this species are all
submerged underwater. They are alternately arranged. Leaves are up to 13 cm
long and about 3 cm wide and are olive
green, ovate-lanceolate to narrowly
lanceolate, not arcuate, base rounded,
margins entire to crispate, and apex not
hood-like. Inflorescences are emersed,
unbranched. The small red berry of this
species is edible.
