- Heating temperature: 100-200-300 dc.
- Pressure in the system: 99-96 kPa.
- Gas flow rate in the system: 700-800 mllmin.
The total mercury in the heated soil was measured with the semiautomated Hg
analyzer Model Hg-3500 cold-vapor atomic absorption analysis device made by
Sanso Seisakusho Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan.
Element analysis of each test soil was done with a JSX-3200type, an X-ray
fluorescent element analysis device made by JEOL. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan. The
crystal structures of the minerals in the soil were analyzed with a M18XHF22-type
X-ray diffractometer made by Mac Science Co.Ltd., Yokohama, Japan.

Test Materials
2.2.1
Soils
- Volcanic ash soil (Kanto loam) from Ikuta, Kanagawa Prefecture.
- Standard sand from Toyoura, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
- Quartz sand reagent Kanto Chemical Co., in corporation. Lot No.
848T A494436.
- Contaminated soil from Tokyo, Japan.
After the volcanic ash soil and contaminated soil were collected, they were airdried indoors and screened to select grains with a diameter of 1-2 mm for the
tests. Table 1 shows the results of X-ray fluorescent element analysis and the
amount of organic material in each soil sample.
2.2.2
Reagents
After the package of pure red mercuric sulfide (Kanto Chemical Co., in
corporation Lot No. 305N16n hereafter referred to as mercuric sulfide) was
opened and washed several times with 1 N HC!. It was then washed again with
pure water until no chlorine reaction with silver nitrate was detected in the
solution. In preparation for testing, the red mercuric sulfide was then dried at
105°C with a fan drier. All other reagents used in the tests were guaranteed
reagents made by Kanto Chemical Co., and were not treated.
2.3
Systems for Reaction
The following four systems for reaction were used in the tests.
1. Artificially contaminated soil made for the tests. After 5 g of each specified soil
was collected in beakers and 0.012 g of mercuric sulfide was weighed out with
