Fig. 3. Map of Hg (ng/m·') distribution in atmosphere, measured to a height of 1 m, in 34 sampling
stations (.) at the abandoned mine structures and restored mine buildings of Abbadia S. Salvatore
(Mt. Amiata, Italy; 25 June 1996). Mine structures (stations): 1 mine offices; 2 mine shaft; 3 wagons; 4
old furnaces; 5 dryer system; 6 cooling towers; 7 Goulder furnaces; 8 nesa furances; 9 nesa cooling
towers; 10 staks. Dotted line denotes fence separating the mine structures from the restored mine
buildings. Restored Buildings (stations): A bag production firm; B drapery; C wine cellar; D leather
production firm
Near the modern Nesa furnaces (St. 8) and the related condensation towers (St.
9) the mercury concentrations were approximately 700-2000 ng/m 3 .
Again in Fig. 3 at station 4, an area now covered by a thick layer of grass, an
atmospheric mercury concentration of 1700 ng/m3 was measured. The reason for
this considerably high value is due to the fact that the first ovens installed for
cinnabar roasting stood in this zone, and although they were razed many years
