g/m3 (Ozerova and Mashyanov 1989; Ozerova 1986). Hydrogen was observed in
mercury-bearing methane gases in Donbass (Donetsky basin).
The reserve of mercury in some hydrocarbon deposits corresponds to that of a
mercury deposit and we stress once more that the noticeable part of mercury is
in the condensate of gas in gas-condensate deposits. Our approximate calculation
has shown that the reserve of mercury in most gas deposits, Groningen, VustrovZalzvedel-Pekenzen (with fairly high mercury content) is assessed at several
thousand tons, while the reserve of mercury in the oil field Cymrik, California
(with a unique high mercury content in oils, up to 2 x 10- 3 ) is, at a minimum,
800 tons (Ozerova 1983, 1986).
While there is not enough material on mercury content in deposits of the
world's different regions (varying strongly because of different geodynamic
settings), it is only possible to calculate yearly mercury content approximately
concerning reworking and using in the world's industry of oil, gas-condensate
and gas. Thus, for oil and condensate yearly mercury content is tens or hundreds
in sum and for gas, tons to tens of tons.

Practical Consequences
It is possible to discuss new regional structures with waiting mercury-bearing gas
and oil deposits based on the characteristics and analysis of their regional
geological position.
Such a structure, recommended by us 15 years ago as potentially mercurybearing (Ozerova 1986), is the Pannonsk-Volinsky structure (Fig. 6). It belongs
to the category of deep structures with a long history, being formed just in the
Riphean. The Pannonsk-Volin sky depression is traced across the folded
construction of the East Carpathians from the northeast to southwest for more
than 900 km. It closes with the Riphean avlacogen of the East European platform
in the northeast and the Solnoksk graben in the Baikal-Caledonian basement of
the Large Hungarian depression in the southwest, and stretches in southwestern
direction to Zagreb, Croatia. The Pannonsk-Volinsky depression is part of a large
lineament, crossing the young folded system and old platform.
Fault activization of the Pannonsk-Volinsky depression in the Carpathians
took place up to modern time. The mercury-bearing Bitkovsky oil deposit
(1 x 10- 4 Hg in oils) was influenced by it as well as hydrothermal processes
forming the mercury deposits of the Vishkovsky ore group, the Uglyansky ore
field and mercury-bearing polymetallic deposits - Beregovsky and the ore area
Baya-Mare. Mercury-bearing gas deposits - Podravina gas field (1-2 mg/m3 in
gas (Spiric 1996) were discovered in the southwestern part of the structure, near
Zagreb, that could well locate in the proposed mercury-bearing structure of the
Pannonsk-Volinsky lineament. Separators for capture of mercury were made in
some deposits. These are hopeful signs in the search for mercury-bearing gases
in Hungarian territory.
