The
dolphin fish Corypkaena hippurus was persennaly
observed moving in large numbers during the fall season in Tripoli
coeast.
The maximum abundance Was reached in September (66,98 —
72,54% of the total individuals caught during the sampling period)
'
and the minimum in November (0,38-12,01) irrespective of the years.
No individuals were caught in January.
'
,Eventhough, the sh was present in enormous quantity in
libyan coastal waters, the catch was very low. This was attributed to
the use of simple and primative shing year, and to shortage of
shennen.
Local
shermen
employ hand trolling and manually
operated surrroundin nets (Lambocara) for catching dolphin sh.

Corphaena hippurus sh are epipelagiec, most of the food
items found in their stomatchs are also epipelagic. This means that this
sh has a narrow range of feeding habits, since rar—e bottom food
items were found among their diet (Mullus surmeletus). .

A correlation might be existed between the availability of food
item and the food boast of C. hz‘ppurus, since the-inajdrfood items,
Belone belone- and Sardinella aurita, are very abundantaldtrgï the
libyan coasts from August to October. This indicatsthatthere—is la coo'ccurrence between the presence of.the predator (C. hzppurus) and
_
the abundance of its food in the same area; The results of this study
agree with such correlation.

Compagny
feeding habits' of C. hz‘ppurus between 1981
and 1982 no”differences were observed. This is probaly due to the
_
presence of the predator C. hz‘ppurusand the food item prèys in the
coastal waters .in the same shing period, late August to October, in

both years. .

Â
Individual sizes of C. hz‘ppurus were nearly the same (about 25
"cm)
,
and no
differences were observed between the ; two years.
However, it is curious that there were no mature individualsof this
sh captured from the coast areas during the sampling period, with
the exception of few mature individuals weighting3
caught in
