CONCLUSION
lt would seem appropriate to emphasize the importance of goldfish far—
ming in Italy shown by this survey which has enabled us, for the first time
in our country, to take a census of a sector of fish culture which has been
ignored by scientific and administrative bodies and which represented, toge—
ther with trout culture which has come to the fore in the last twenty years,
the only active industry in the zootechnical sector.
Even though not all parts of the questionaires given to farmers and who1esa1ers were filled in (since they dealt with old, non—codified or forgotten
information) the result has been of interest and has enabled us, among other
things, to visualize the situation from 1960 to 1984, which in terms of production and sales, seems somewhat worse than expected. The drop in production
from 1975 to
1980 and the export of products which were often defective from
a
sanitary point of view, has meant that Italian farmers have rapidly lost
some
international markets, in which they were undisputed leaders until a few
years ago.
This together with the promotional campaigns
in other producing
countries, has enabled the American goldfish to enter first the English market
and then all the other important European markets. Since 1978, the sanitary
conditions of our farms have great1y improved due to the introduction of preventive treatments against
and the use of balanced feeds which
satisfy the species' requirements, thus enabling us to market products which,
from a sanitary point of view, are not inferior to the American fish.
—
Goldfish farming, if carried out rationally, can be profitable and can
often give higher profits than those obtained from the production of other
freshwater fish species (carp, catfish).
