Africa
Carps
have been successfully introduced into many African
countries (e.g.
Kenya and
Lesotho) but few viable culture industries have
resulted.
In Nigeria,
758t of common carp were produced
in 1983
from
303ha and there are
isolated
reports
of good growth rates
elsewhere;
for example, 3kg/yr in
Zambia
(K .H.
Ibrahim, pers. comm). The largest industries are probably in Egypt and the Sudan.

production

Chinese carps have
limited market potential (S afrie1 and Bruton, 1984).

carp culture comprises large and smallsc ale industries, old and new.

others

In
China (PRG), :eshwater fish production probably exceeds 1 million
t/yr of which about 60% is from semi—intensive culture ponds, most1y carps (FAO
1982; E8CAP,
1982).
Large quantities of carpe are cultured or taken from inland
waters in
Bangladesh and India.
In Bangladesh,
annual
production
was
around
62000t/yr for 1978—1980 and 69000t in 1982 (BBS, 1983). In India, inland fisheries
