Marine ingredients from algae and other sources satisfy the above criteria in
terms of cosmetic effects and relationships and appear to offer outstanding materials
for cosmetic use.
In the past, those wishing to known what ingredients were used in cosmetics
could consult official compendiums of materials in the pharmaceutical approval
precedents, including the “Cosmetic Ingredient Standards” and “Standards for
Ingredient Mixtures by Cosmetic Type.” Today, regulations on cosmetics are
becoming looser, and there is no need for registration in the compendiums
described above. The rules listed in them are useful, however, as a standard for
judging quality.
Table 8.9 shows some of the marine-derived ingredients found in the compendiums. Because this table is based on ingredients in the pharmaceutical approval
precedents, it also includes ingredients such as whale oil that are no longer in use.
The listings show basic ingredients of cosmetics to include oils such as squalane
and squalene; sodium alginate, which is used in moisturizers and thickeners; and
fish scales, which are used for pearl pigment agent (Hineno 2005).
