5.5.4 Microsatellite DNA Polymorphs
Gene locus and alleles: In terms of microsatellite DNA (sites in non-coding regions
where the number of repeating base sequence units is small) and minisatellite DNA
(where the number is large), DNA fragments are referred to as gene loci and alleles.
The terms are used for convenience because the mode of inheritance for the fragments
follows Mendelian principles regardless of the presence of absence of gene functioning
in the detected site (Figs. 5.6 and 5.7). The situation is thus similar to isozymes in terms
of being an indicator for level of mutation and for differentiation between populations
(Fahima et al. 1998; Schlötterer 2000; Norris et al. 2001; Taniguchi 2000).
Genetic variability within populations: This is assessed with the average number
of alleles per gene locus or the rate of polymorph gene loci and average
heterozygosity rate. For microsatellite DNA polymorphs with large numbers of
Comparison of patterns for artificial seedlings for release and artificial seedlings for farming.
