Peter W. Gorham
He was a Research Fellow in Physics, California Institute of Technology from
1987 to 1989 and a Senior Research Fellow in Physics, Caltech to 1991, then a
Research Professor at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, 1991-1996 and Senior
Member of the Technical Staff, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech, 1996-2001.
Today he is Chair, Department of Astronomy and Physics at the University of
Hawaii, Manoa. He was the Principal Investigator on five stratospheric balloon
flights of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) that looked for
ultra-high energy neutrinos and made the first measurements of the Askaryan
effect. He is known for his work in the radio detection of high energy particles.

He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a B.S. in Physics in
1980, then attended the University of Chicago, earning a Master of Science in
Physics in 1984 and a Ph.D. in Physics in 1988. He is a former NASA astronaut and
veteran of five Space Shuttle flights to service and repair the Hubble Space Telescope.
He also served as NASA Chief Scientist. His academic background includes research
in high energy astrophysics, cosmic rays and the new field of exoplanets with a specific interest in future astronomical instrumentation. After retiring from NASA in
