1 Before generating gas,
displace all air to this point
by raising leveling bulb.
2 Flush air from generator
and connecting tubes before
turning stopcock to fill buret.
3 Hg leveling bulb to be
lowered as the generator
produces gas after
the stopcock opens
the buret to the
generating system.

of gas if pressure exceeds
barometric pressure by h torr

Simple methods for collecting gases.
b. Add insufficient acid to an insoluble base (or vice versa, if appropriate) for complete reaction with the base, filter off and discard the
excess base, and evaporate the water from the nitrate to get X. In
this context, a base is defined as an oxide, a hydroxide, or a carbonate. The acid is completely used up, and therefore does not contaminate the filtrate.
c. Add insufficient acid to a metal whose half-reaction (Table 17-1) lies
above the H 2 -H+ half-reaction, filter off and discard the excess
metal, and evaporate the water from the filtrate to get X. The
evolved H 2 gas should be kept away from flames.
d. Add an excess of HNO 3 to a metal (almost any metal except Al, Pt,
Sn, or Au) to produce the soluble metal nitrate. To this acidic solu-
