1.4.2 La fonction Arc tangente
Définition. Pour tout x ∈ R, on note Arctan x l’unique nombre
α ∈ ]−π/2,π/2[ tel que x = tan α.
La fonction Arctan : R →]−π/2,π/2[ s’appelle la fonction Arc tangente.
® Pour tout x ∈ R, on a tan ( Arctan x) = x.
® Pour tout α ∈ ]−π/2,π/2[ , on a Arctan( tan α) = α.
La fonction Arctan est la bijection réciproque
de la fonction tan : ]−π/2,π/2[→ R .
On en déduit les propriétés suivantes.
• La fonction Arctan est continue et strictement croissante.
• La fonction Arctan est impaire, car tangente est impaire.

La courbe de Arctan a donc une asymptote horizontale d’équation
