non-alignment during pasting is made of the exact size as the requirement of the
box.
Slotting
Slotting is the process of removing the material from the edges from where the sheet
will be folded while packing the product. This is done to avoid the overlapping of
the thick corrugated sheet while folding.
Die-Punching
This process is an alternative to the creasing and slotting operations. Die for a particular size of the box is designed and the pasted sheet is punched on that die. This single
operation does horizontal and vertical creasing along with slotting. Also, manufacturing of boxes other than cuboids shape can be done by die-punching. Since this
process requires the die for a particular shape and size of the box, the cost of die
makes it difficult for small order size box manufacturing. Therefore, die-punching
cannot completely replace the creasing and slotting operations.
Stitching/Glueing
The box is stitched using stitching wire. This operation is similar to the stapling
operation. Sometimes the metallic stitches may damage the product inside due to
sharp edges. To avoid this damage, the box is glued instead of stitching. This glueing
process requires another bonding agent.
Strapping
The boxes are piled and bounded together by straps for transportation.
The process of corrugated box manufacturing in the identified industry is shown
in Fig. 5.
1.1 Raw Materials of the Industry
1. The major raw material of corrugation plant is bleached or non-bleached recycled kraft paper and paper board. The quality of the paper is specified by two
factors: Bursting Factor (BF) or Bursting Strength and area density (GSM).
Bursting factor signifies the load at which paper bursts, whereas GSM or grams
per square metre shows the weight density of paper, which is also considered
while finding the weight of the box. Higher BF and GSM resembles a higher
strength of the kraft paper. Kraft paper is used in corrugation as well as for single
colour printing, while the duplex paper board is used for four-colour printing.
2. Gum is used for various processes like corrugation, pasting and glueing. During
corrugation, the gum is used to paste the corrugated layer over the plain sheet
of paper. In pasting operation, multiple corrugated sheets or printed papers are
pasted by using the gum.
