a platform of YYP in SETI to accelerate the implementation of DRR in line with the
Sendai framework to support DRR policy and action at the local, national, and international level, with the vision, is “Indonesian YYP as the generator of SETI for disaster
resilience at national and global level”. After the formal initiation, U-INSPIRE later
conducted the first regional workshop on November 1–4, 2018 by the support from
UNESCO Jakarta, ICIAR LIPI, UNDRR, UNMGCY, IRDR, ITB, and other partners
with the theme Strengthening, Empowering, and Mobilizing YYP in SETI for DRR
in Asia and the Pacific. The workshop was attended by 20 speakers and 53 participants from 32 countries from Asia and the Pacific, Africa, Europe, America and was
conducted to address some of the YYP’ challenges and potentials in contributing to
DRR, including inter alia, limited opportunities and platform contribute in SETI for
DRR. Objectives of this workshop were to build understanding among YYP on their
role in SETI for DRR as well as various important topics to leverage their roles, to
develop joint programs or research to support the implementation of SFDRR and
to share lessons learned from the establishment of U-INSPIRE Indonesia. The official launching of U-INSPIRE was held on November 3, 2019, marking the birth of
U-INSPIRE as the YYP platform for SETI in DRR in Indonesia. Some notables’
outputs from the workshops were the common understanding among participants on
limited jobs and opportunities for YYP in Asia and the Pacific to contribute to DRR
activites and there is a need to have a platform that can bridge the missing link and
answer the demand. Interestingly, participants from other countries saw the model
and the establishment of U-INSPIRE in Indonesia is essential in bridging and filling
the gap between youth, young professionals and DRR. This later led to the expression
of interests from participants in replicating the establishment of U-INSPIRE in their
respective countries.
In terms of its division, currently, U-INSPIRE has four working groups (WGs)
with its specific goals and activities. The first WG is Knowledge Management WG
that aims to create space for data and resources management and utilization for
inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinary research, enabling the platform to respond to
issues related to SETI. The second one is Innovation Room WG that is focusing on
empowering and strengthening capacities and substance of SETI in DRR and acting
as a catalyst for advanced inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinary research. The third WG
is Science Communication WG with the purpose to translate and utilize scientific
knowledge to improve resilience through SETI in DRR, and the last WG is Advocacy,
Communication, and Networking WG with the goals to engage in science-based DRR
policy development and action at local, national, regional, and international level
and to strengthen network and collaboration on research, innovation, and policy. In
addition to U-INSPIRE WGs, activities and collaboration are mainly categorized into
the following activities: (1) research and dissemination, (2) science communication
and education, (3) design and technological innovation, (4) evidence-based policy,
and (5) operations (Hanifa et al. 2020).
From the first launching on November 3, 2018 up to October 27, 2019, UINSPIRE has 188 members, 57% male and 43% female coming from 22 provinces
across Indonesia. However, most of the members are still centralized from Java
