4.3.3 Simultaneous Removal of Phosphorous and Nitrogen

To simultaneously remove nitrogen and phosphorous from wastewater, methods such
as Bardenpho, Phoredox, UCT, etc., could be used. The Bardenpho process, as shown
in Fig. 4.6a, includes alternating aerobic and anoxic zones where the sludge mix is
treated. The return activated sludge first enters an anaerobic tank, and then flows
into a combined anoxic-aerobic as pre-denitrification/nitrification step with internal
circulation, followed by an anoxic tank and a final aeration (O 2 ) tank to remove
nitrogen and prevent the transfer of the nitrates back to the first anaerobic tank by the
