6.6 Building Layout with Evacuation Capacity
In this example, we want to assign departments to a seven-floor building with two
sets of stairwells, minimizing the total flow. We must also assign each department
to exactly one of the two stairwells so that, in the event of evacuation, we do not
exceed the capacity of either stairwell (see Sect. 5.3.3).
We must assign 10 departments to 7 floors. The area of each floor is 15 square
units, and Table 6.11 gives the areas of the departments. The flows between each
pair of departments are symmetric, and they are as follows:
