Alternatively, the problem can be modelled as an MRFLP or a UA-FLP if we
make different assumptions on the dimensions of the workstations and the possible
layout structures.
We have adapted the original application (see Sect. 6.10), which we observe is a
dynamic layout problem.
6.5 Automotive Starter Battery Production
This example concerns a manufacturing plant that produces three types of automotive starter batteries. The plant is 24 × 22 m 2 , and it is divided into 8 areas
(departments). The names and dimensions of the departments are presented in
Table 6.8.
The specific problem is a practical application of dynamic facility layout. The
production is divided into three time periods, and the production plan is different for
each period. As a consequence, the flows between areas differ in each of the three
periods. They are given in Table 6.9. The unit costs of the material flows are reported
in Table 6.10, and it costs $500 to change one area’s activity between periods.
