Plate- Tectonic Setting of Alluvial Basins
11.4.5.1 Peripheral Fare/and Basins
The western Pacific offers several examples of peripheral basins formed by arc-arc collision. For example, a series of small peripheral basins developed
in central Honshu ) Japan, as a result of the collision
of the Izu-Bonin arc with Honshu during the late
Cenozoic (Ito and Masuda 1986). Fan deltas and
submarine fans are the donlinant types of depositional system. Arc-continent collisions may lead to

the development of larger peripheral basins. For example, during the late Cenozoic, the Luzon arc collided with the Chinese mainland, creating the island
of Taiwan, the western part of which constitutes a
fold-thrust belt and associated peripheral basin
(Covey 1986; Teng 1990).
Many of the world's largest and best-known
foreland basins (Himalayan foredeep, Appalachian
basin, Swiss Flysch-Molasse basin, Adriatic foreland, and Persian Gulf) resulted from continent0
