basins. The basins are entirely nonmarine, containing thick synorogenic fl uvial deposits, commonly
preserving proximal fanglomerates, and lacustrine
successions. Drainage is mainly internal, although
Dickinson et al. ( 1988) summarized evidence for
spillage between basins and possible drainage eastward into the continental interior and westward
across the Sierra Nevada magmatic arc to the Pacific
Ocean. There are many paleOgeographic similarities
between these basins and the hinterland basins of
the Himalayan orogen (Sect. 11.5.5.2).
Two studies of basins adjacent to the southern
Andes serve as examples of retroarc foreland basins
developed in the absence of collisional events. The
Neogene Bermejo Basin of northwest Argentina con
tains a crudely coarsening upward succession of fl uvial siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate. Johnson
et a!. (1986) and jordan et a!. (1988) discussed the
uses of various facies and stratigraphic criteria in an
attempt to relate sedimentation to tectonic events
and to develop an accurate picture of the subsidence
history. Biddle et a!. (1986) provided a stratigraphic
synthesis of the Magallanes Basin of southern
