biodiversity or ecological assets and of working to protect them’. We see in this a
nexus between material and structural causal mechanisms.
Respondent 10’s causal mechanism diagram is similar in shape to those of Respondents 6, 7, 8 and 9. Material causal mechanisms received a score of 24, followed by
structural mechanisms, with a score of 19, while agential and ideational mechanisms received scores of 13 and 8, respectively (Fig. 3.43). As a researcher at the
INR, Respondent 10 had more knowledge about green and ecological infrastructures
than structural mechanisms, such as the municipality’s policies, plans, bylaws and
standards. This explains her high score for material causal mechanisms. On this,
Respondent 10 said that, ‘[m]y understanding is that their [SANBI’s] definition is
about natural systems, but I think you can view an ecological infrastructure as being
a component of a green infrastructure, but not the other way around. She went on to
say that a green infrastructure ‘does not incorporate natural systems…’ but ‘…refers
