and agential mechanisms, which came in at 23 and 18, respectively (Fig. 3.42). She
spoke more about ideational causal mechanisms than Respondents 6, 7 and 8, whose
graphs are similar to hers. For instance, during our conversation about her understanding of the concept ‘green infrastructure’, she indicated that ‘there is quite a lot
of confusion around the concept’ and that it has various meanings. Because of this,
her ‘own understanding is quite a broad one’ (Respondent 9) (p 86). In this case,
we see that the use of ideational mechanisms by others has had an influence on her
understanding (which is itself a causal mechanism) of the concept ‘green infrastructure’. Because she is a municipal official, she has good knowledge of its policies,
plans, bylaws and standards regarding the implementation of green infrastructures.
This explains the high scores that were received for structural causal mechanisms.
Just like Respondent 8, she spoke at length about the D’MOSS, which she described
as ‘systematic conservation planning’ and ‘a scientific way of helping to identify key
