‘Because, I think it takes people quite a bit of time, and
that is where I think eThekwini is very good in
understanding the difference between biodiversity,
ecosystem services and ecological infrastructure. To
me, the closer relationship is between an ecological
infrastructure and ecosystem services, because it goes
into that ecological infrastructure framing. So, the
infrastructure provides you with the services.
Biodiversity is part of that, but it is also different to it.
So, you can give up on some biodiversity, in order to
get ecosystem services in the ecological infrastructure’
(Respondent 3)
‘So, terminology is important, and I would say that
there is a difference in terms of terminology. Green
infrastructure for experts and professionals means one
thing, and for the layman it means another thing. What
I perceive as a green infrastructure, at least in
eThekwini, I think that when people think and talk
about a green infrastructure, they are perhaps talking
about pavements made from recycled tyres,
energy-efficient buildings or those buildings that
generate their own electricity. An ecological
infrastructure is obviously the natural environment, as
opposed to the built environment. That is how I
perceive the differentiation’ (Respondent 12)
eThekwini as an organisation that understands how
biodiversity, ecosystem services and ecological infrastructure
relate to each other interdependently
Green infrastructure is used by actors with different interests
and identities (municipal officials and the public)
