Carbon Footprint Assessment with LCA Methodology

worldwide. Looking at the growing pace of the construction sector, one can estimate
the requirement of assessment. The context must be analyzed to study the probable
environmental impacts to have an input–output mapping of the sector, especially for
the high contributing countries.
The study intends to assess the carbon footprint for the global construction sector
where the environmental impacts are caused due to the uncontrolled release of carbon
emissions. Also, the accountable factors are highlighted to recommend imposing
supervised control. The study conducted here is carried by Onat and Kucukvar [44],
which presents a detailed analysis signifying the various subbing processes that
contribute to the carbon footprint.
Objective: The carbon footprint of the global construction sector.
Goal and scope: The context here is the global construction sector where the
unchecked outflow of carbon emissions is addressed. The study is focused on the
five countries which are the highest contributors. These countries are China, USA,
India, Japan, and Canada. The emissions are divided into three types; direct, indirect
(regional), and indirect (global).
Inventory generation: Inventory is prepared from the standard databases named
MRIO (multirange input–output), which represent the carbon emissions being
released in each sector and for each country. A sample of the data is illustrated
to provide the extent being released and the proportionate share of each country.
Impact assessment: China and India are the most populous country and thus growing
their infrastructure significantly, which is also imperative of the carbon emission
values shown in Table 6, having a share of 40% and 35%, respectively. However,
there are limited studies on the sustainability studies as such, in which the present
time demands extensively.
Interpretation and recommendation: With the increasing growth of countries and
their economy, the construction is also growing multifold, which is also extending the
carbon footprint. This extension of the footprint is unknowingly creating an impact on
the environment and the results are clearly visible in recent times, which is getting
worsen day by day. The remedy of this lies in the integration of sustainability to
all the attributes. A comparative study of the construction sector with and without
sustainable methods will ensure a transparent view of the reduction in shrinking the
carbon footprint.
