Carbon Footprint Estimation of an Indian Thermal Power Plant …
103
Factors under GHG Program, 2015, Version 1.0. is considered for calculation of
emission.
Chemicals required annually (around 1650 MT) for production purpose were
transported by road from suppliers based in locations ranging between 25 and 250 km.
For calculation of emission from transportation of chemicals emission factor of
freight vehicle as per India Specific Road Transport Emission Factors, Version 1.0.
(under India GHG Program prescribed by WRI India, TERI and CII in 2015) has
been used.
Overall carbon footprint from transportation of coal, fuel and chemicals in 2016–
17 amounted to 27,113 tCO 2 e.
B. Carbon Footprint of production process, energy used in administrative
offices and business travel/tours of employees (Direct Emission)
The total annual electricity generated by the coal-based plant (constituting of five
generation units each having a capacity of 210 MW) was 1050 MW. The coal used in
the production of electricity is non-coking bituminous coal having 35% ash content.
A quantity of 45,46,282 MT (of grade D and E) was fed into the boiler for achieving
higher efficiency. This was supported by use of 5,350 kilo litres (KL) of Light Diesel
Oil. Estimation of CF produced by combustion of coal and oil has been made based
on emission factors prescribed by Guidance for Voluntary Corporate Greenhouse
Gas Reporting, 2015 by Ministry of Environment exclusively for Indian industries
using Data and Methods from the 2013 calendar (INFO 734) was used. The auxiliary
operations of the plant consumed 9.56% of the total annual generation of 7050 million
kWh in 2016–2017. This auxiliary energy requisite is met out the power generated
by the plant. So CF from production of electricity amounted to 120,63,430 tCO 2 e.
Another form of direct emission resulted from the energy used in the administrative offices of the plant and from the business travels of the officers and other
employees of the plant and its office. The energy requirement of the office is met out
of generated electricity, so emission from this source is not measured independently.
So far as emission from business travel of the officials are considered a number
of information was obtained from the travel register of the plant and the distance
travelled was calculated on the basis of the gathered information and assuming that
the two wheelers used have an engine capacity of 1500 cc and more and four wheelers
are of less than 1000 cc capacity (small cars). CF of business travel was made
based on India Specific Road Transport Emission Factors, Version 1.0. under India
GHG Program prescribed by WRI India, TERI and CII in 2015. Travel register
information revealed the details of the number of two- and four-wheeler vehicles
and their corresponding travel days and distance travelled 2016–2017:
(i) Two wheelers (around 500 diesel-operated vehicles) run on an average between
10 and 20 km per day for 300–340 days.
(ii) Four wheelers (around 35–40 diesel-operated small cars and small buses) travel
an average distance of 70–100 km per day for 300–340 days.
(iii) 500 bicycles are on run for 330–365 days travelling a distance of 3–5 km per
day.
