5.3 Preliminary Studies for Comparison of Performance
Between Fixed-Bed Hybrid Bioreactor
and Suspended-Growth System
5.3.1 Basic Approach
As a preliminary study, two reactors—one fixed-bed hybrid bioreactor and another
suspended-growth reactor were run with synthetic carbonaceous wastewater in the
same operating conditions of input COD and MLSS at same batch period. The
purpose of this study is to observe the performance of the fabricated hybrid bioreactor with respect to the suspended one. The batch period was provided as 8 h for
all the cases. The sample was taken at a batch interval of 2 h. At each batch interval,
MLSS of the reactor content, COD, NH4
+ –N and NO3
− N of soluble sample were
determined to compare the performance between the two reactors.
5.3.2 Experimental Procedure
Firstly, two reactors (two PVC Jars each of 15 L each) one suspended growth and
other hybrid bioreactor were placed side by side connected with two numbers aqua
pumps in each reactor. Required quantity of sludge from municipal wastewater was
put in both the reactors. Synthetic carbonaceous wastewater with required input
COD was prepared from the stock solution and accordingly was poured into each
reactor. Six (6) batch runs were performed under synthetic carbonaceous wastewater
with COD in the range of (100–250) mg/l and MLSS in the range of (2000–2500)
mg/l. The batch study for both the suspended and hybrid bioreactor system was
conducted for a total batch period of 8 h and was continued over 6 days. The results
of the experimental results are shown in Table 6b, Annexure III-c. The results of
preliminary batch study clearly demonstrate that the hybrid bioreactor system is
more capable to remove especially the carbonaceous matter than the conventional
ASP system. However, nitrification by means of oxidation of NH4
+ –N has not been
improved in case of fixed-bed hybrid bioreactor.
