Chapter 6
Performance Evaluation of Fixed-Bed
Hybrid Bioreactor Under Synthetic
Carbonaceous Wastewater
6.1 Preparation of Synthetic Carbonaceous Wastewater
A synthetic carbonaceous wastewater was used as a stock solution, where, COD
concentration was set to about 1000 mg/l. Adequate nitrogen and phosphorus were
also added to this stock solution in accordance with carbon. Variable initial COD
concentrations were set by diluting the stock solution with distilled water. The
composition of stock synthetic solution is shown in Table 6.1.
6.2 Semi-batch Study in the Hybrid Bioreactor
Semi-batch study was conducted on the fixed-bed hybrid bioreactor using synthetic
carbonaceous wastewater in order to get the response under highly biodegradable
environment. This is also to ascertain the consistent performance of the fixed-bed
hybrid bioreactor before going to its continuous operation. The objective, scope and
detailed procedure of the semi-batch study are illustrated below.
6.2.1 Objective and Scope
The experimental plan was to check the response of the fixed-bed hybrid bioreactor
under semi-batch mode of operation with synthetic wastewater. The semi-batch study
was basically conducted as a part of performance evaluation of the fixed-bed hybrid
bioreactor as well as for determining the kinetic coefficients from the experimental
results required for finding out the outputs from the mathematical model.
Scope of the semi-batch study is to determine the COD concentration as well
as mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) in the respective batch intervals during
the period of semi-batch operation. Apart from that, the attached biomass density
