2.2.2 The Suspended Carrier Biofilm Process (SCBP)
It is also known as Kaldnes moving bed biofilm reactor, which was applied as extension of existing treatment facilities [22–25]. Here, the dispersed biofilm media was
high-density polyethylene for supporting the biofilm growth. The increased biomass
concentration in the reactor, and much higher solid retention time (SRT) of the
attached biomass result in efficient carbon removal and improved nitrification and
denitrification, through process intensification [26]. Compared to a conventional
activated sludge process, a similar degree of treatment or effluent standard can be
achieved in a much smaller volume [22]. The schematic diagram of suspended carrier
biofilm process is shown in Fig. 2.2.
