5.65 The Case of Persistent Free Radicals
in the Atmosphere
Combustion and thermal processes are dominant sources of air pollution and produce toxic products, specially particulate matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons, and environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) [32]. These
later generate DNA damage and induce pulmonary dysfunction. EPFRs on PM are
formed through interaction of aromatic compounds with transition metal oxides via
