7 Risk Assessment and Management of Chemical Processes
Design Specifications
The following design specifications for the process have currently been set:
• Reactor volume: 1 m 3
• Construction material: rubber-coated steel vessel
• Process makes use of an:
– Anchor agitator
– Polytron grinder
– Drum for cyanuric chloride
– Drum for Na 2 HPO 4
– Feed lines for steam, ice, and water (three separate pipelines)
– pH and temperature measurement devices
The standard operating procedure for the process step defines the following
sequence of events:
1. Check lines; close floor valve
2. Add water
3. Turn on stirrer
4. Add buffer
5. Add ice
6. Add cyanuric chloride
7. Turn on grinder
8. Stir and grind
9. Turn off grinder
10. Check lines; open floor valve and drain into the next reactor (condensation with
amine)
11. Turn off stirrer
12. Wash reactor with water
7.9.2 Definition of Safe Process Conditions (Step 2)
Considering the data collected in the first step of the risk assessment, the following
safe process conditions can be defined:
• Temperature of 0–2 ◦ C
• pH of approximately 7
• Controlled and continuous stirring
• Adherence to the sequence of loading as defined in the standard operating
procedure
• Absorption of any traces of cyanuric chloride
• Use of a rubber-coated steel vessel
