7 Variational Principles
et Méthode (1908) and Dernières Penseés (1913) etc., after his death the French
Academy of Sciences published his works 10 volumes.
Robin (Victor Gustave, 1855.5.17–1897) French mathematician. The places of birth
and death are unknown. Had taught at the Sorbonne in Paris, was good at capacity
theory and theory of differential equations, and also worked in the area of thermodynamics. Had proposed the Robin constant and the Robin problem for the elliptic
partial differential equation. The French Academy of Sciences awarded him the Prix
Francœur for 1893 and again for 1897 and the Prix Poncelet for 1895.
Banach (Stefan, 1892.3.30–1945.8.31) Polish mathematician, the founder of functional analysis. Born in Kraków, died in Lwów (or Lviv, Lvov), Ukraine. Graduated
from the University of Lwów in 1914 and take the teaching post after graduation,
obtained a PhD in 1920. Served as a professor at the University of Lwów in 1927.
Served as the president at the University of Lwów from 1939 to 1941. Became a
communication academician of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1924, was also a
communication academician of the Ukraine Academy of Sciences, Served as the president of the Poland Mathematical Society in 1939. Won the key science award of the
Polish Academy of Sciences in 1939. He and Steinhaus (Hugo Dionisi, 1887.1.14–
1972.2.25) together created and led the school of Lwów. In 1932, his famous work
Théeorie des opértions linéaires was published, and became one of the most important classical works of functional analysis. Introduced the concept of normed linear
space, established the theory of linear operator on it. Made important contributions
to series theory, set theory, measure theory, integration theory, theory of ordinary
differential equations and complex function theory etc. aspects. Published 58 papers
and works.
Tricomi (Francesco Giacomo Filippo, 1897.5.5–1978.11.21) Italian mathematician.
Born in Naples, died in Turin. Received a doctor’s degree at the University of Naples
in 1918. Later worked in Padua and Rome. Served as a professor at the University
of Florence and University of Turin in 1925. Had visited the California Institute of
Technology in USA from 1943 to 1945 and from 1948 to 1950. Was elected a member
of the Accademia nazionale dei Lincein in 1961. Served as the vice president and
the president of the Turin Academy of Sciences from 1972 to 1976. The research
scope involved geometry, algebra, analysis, probability theory and air dynamics
etc. The contributions to theory of mixed partial differential equations and theory
of integral equations are well known. In 1923 first researched the mixed partial
differential equation in the form of yu xx + u yy = 0, later it is called the Tricomi
equation, and proposed the new boundary value problem to the equation, namely the
Tricomi problem. Proved the existence and uniqueness theorem of solution of the
equation. Also studied the numerical solution method of integral equation and gave
error estimate. The works had Funzioni Analitiche (1937, 1946, 1961), Vorlesungen
über Orthogonalreihen (1955) and Integral Eqs. (1957, 1985) etc.
