Teide, later known as Observatorio del Teide), was created by Ministerial Order
on 10 February 1959. The story of the author’s role in developing astrophysics
in the Canary Islands is told by José B. Navarro, Francisco Sánchez Martínez:
La Facultad de las Estrellas (Centro Cultura Popular Canaria, 2018).
Chapter 3
Tenerife and Mount Teide on the Moon (1724–1914)
Ewen A. Whittaker, Mapping and Naming the Moon (Cambridge: Cambridge
University Press, 1999), gives a detailed history of lunar nomenclature.
Thomas Sprat describes an expedition to Pico Teneriffe (‘A relation of the Pico
Teneriffe’) in The History of the Royal-Society of London (London: J. Martyn,
1667), 200–13. Van Langren is more commonly known to astronomers as
Langrenus (see J. M. Lattis, BEA, vol. 1, 676–7). There are also entries for
Riccioli (J. F. MacDonnell, BEA, vol. 2, 968–9), Schröter (C. J. Cunningham,
BEA, vol. 2, 1030–1), and Birt (R. McGown, BEA, vol. 1, 131). For a useful
description of scientific expeditions to the Canary Islands in the eighteenth
century see Alfredo Herrero Pique, Las Islas Canarias, escala científica en el
Atlántico: viajeros y naturalistas en el siglo XVIII (Madrid: Editorial Rueda,
1987). The Darwin quotation is from F. Darwin (ed.), The Autobiography of
Charles Darwin and Selected Letters (New York: Dover Publications, 1958), 136.
Chapter 5
The Zodiacal Light (1962–1968)
A gentle, but now somewhat dated, introduction to interplanetary matter is
given by F.  G. Watson, Between the Planets (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard
University Press, 1956, 172–9). A rigorous treatment of dust grains is provided by L. Spitzer’s standard text, Physical Processes in the Interstellar Medium
(Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1978) and H. C. van de Hulst, Light
Scattering by Small Particles, 2nd edn (New York: Dover Publications, 1981).
One of the first publications reporting work done at Teide Observatory concerned the photometry of the green flash: F.  Sánchez and R.  Dumont,
