Perhaps It All Began with an Eclipse (1959–1961)
A general history of astronomy in Spain from its earliest beginnings until
2009 is provided in the doctoral thesis of Iván Fernández Pérez, Aproximación
histórica al desarrollo de la astronomía en España (University of Santiago de
Compostela, 2009). For an overview of the history of solar studies in Tenerife,
see Manuel Vázquez Abeledo, Observando el sol desde Tenerife: una Aventura
sobre el mar de nubes (La Laguna: IAC, 2019). Detailed descriptions of Spanish
administrative and governmental structures during the Franco era are given
by S. G. Payne, Franco’s Spain (London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1968) and
by J.  Amodia, Franco’s Political Legacy: From Fascism to Façade Democracy
(London: Penguin Books, 1977). Severo Ochoa’s acceptance address for the
1959 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is reproduced in Nobel Lectures,
Physiology or Medicine (Amsterdam: Elsevier, 1964). The Consejo Superior de
Investigación y Ciencia (CSIC, ‘Upper Council for Science and Research’) was
created in 1939 by Law 24-11-1939 (BOE 27 y 28-11-1939). It replaced the
Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigación (JAE, ‘Council for the
