2.1.2 Nomenclature of FSW Process
Numerous terminologies used for FSW are shown in Fig. 2.2. Meaning and its
implication of each term are mentioned below:
• Tool shoulder: It is the feature of the tool that makes contact with the upper
surface of the workpiece. It contributes approximately 80 to 92% of the total
heat produced. Heat generation takes place due to friction at the interface of the
tool-workpiece and workpiece deformation.
• Tool pin: Protruded part of the tool that impinges into the material and is responsible for the material stirring in the thickness direction. Its contribution to heat
generation is about 10 to 20%. The heat generation is majorly due to stirring that
leads to plastic deformation between the pin surface and workpiece and partially
due to frictional heat as well.
